Design Submission Guidelines

Overview

Compass Games LLC is actively seeking game submissions from game designers. Currently, we are interested in high-quality games that portray topics based on historical military history. We are interested in all periods of military history, that said, a game about the Third Kandyan War, no matter how good, may be beyond our ability to publish successfully.

Solitaire playability is preferred, whether by simple two-handed play or facilitated by minor rule modifications or a full solo bot system.

Your game should be thoroughly tested, well-researched, and, above all, fun to play. In addition, it must be highly replayable, with multiple paths to victory for each side and meaningful decisions facing the player(s) each turn. It should be possible to recreate both the historical result and various hypothetical outcomes. Hopeless battles and campaigns may not be what we want to publish unless the design has some outstanding feature(s). Play balance is critical to our customers. Both or all sides in the case of a multi-player game should have a reasonable chance to win.

Requirements

For your initial submission, please send the following assets via email to [email protected]:

  • A brief introduction to the game covering its theme and core mechanics, focusing on the highlights that make your design stand out in the current market.
  • Digital copy of the current rulebook (PDF, Word, or RTF format)
  • Folder of prototype game assets (maps, counters, etc.) on Google Drive or Dropbox
  • Link to your playable digital prototype on Tabletop Simulator or Vassal (optional)
  • Your name and preferred contact information (e-mail & phone number)

Note that the submitted game should have a complete ruleset, not merely game notes. We should be able to read the rules and learn how to play the game with minimal fuss. Please include adequate examples in difficult areas or where there is a unique game mechanic or twist.

If we decide that your idea may meet our needs, we may ask you to send a playable physical prototype for our team to review. Please note that this does not automatically mean that your game has been accepted for publication.

The Golden Age Collection

In addition to the submission guidelines listed above, our team is looking for designs to expand our Golden Age Collection—launched in 2023 with the Kickstarter campaign for Christopher Moeller’s fantasy wargame, Burning Banners. If you are working on a game that combines elements from traditional wargames (hex and counter, CRT, point-to-point, card-driven combat, etc.) with those of another tabletop genre (Euro, Ameri, RPG, etc.), we would love to hear from you!

Our ideal games will be in a playable prototype stage (not fully themed and illustrated), have a solid solitaire mode or one in development, and combine classic mechanics from both sides in an engaging and accessible way. Campaign modes and designs that allow players to craft a narrative are a plus. No NSFW content or party games, please.

If submitting a design for the Golden Age Collection, please note that in your initial email.
