Issue 113
Inchon, MacArthur’s Gambit by James P. Werbaneth

This two-player game simulates the daring attack by the United Nations’ X Corps against the port of Inchon and its subsequent advance on Seoul in September 1950. The operation resulted in the liberation of that capital city and the severing of the lines of communication to the North Korean units fighting around the Pusan Perimeter. As a result, virtually the entire North Korean People’s Army (NKPA) in the south was destroyed, allowing UN forces to occupy all of North Korea but for a few mountainous enclaves. Unfortunately, one of the indirect results of this dramatic victory was Red Chinese intervention, once more throwing the UN into full retreat.

Designed by James P. Werbaneth, each full turn represents one day of real-time, and each large hexagon on the 34×22 map represents one mile from side to opposite side. The 176 large (5/8”) units represent battalions and individual ships. This new edition is a graphic update (incorporating the minor errata); no rule changes have been made.

BONUS GAME MATERIAL: Also included in the issue is a second large-size counter-sheet containing units for Lou Coatney’s “Big Solution” variant scenario for WWII Campaigns: 1940, 1941, and 1942’s 1941 and Ty Bomba’s “December 1944” scenario for 1940. Take to the skies with Gregory M. Smith as he shares the historical background for Zeppelin Raider.  Finally, by way of ‘value add,’ Kevin Cantwell presents two (designer-approved) full-size ‘mats’ for Greg Smith’s American Tank Ace (M36 Jackson & M36B1 Jackson)

Issue 114
Combat! The Brecourt Manor Assault, 6 June 1944 by Mathew Hinkle

The acclaimed solitaire series of man-to-man combat in World War II, now playable in Paper Wars! This is a standalone game with four complete scenarios (two historical, two general), with no ownership of previous Combat! games required.

The focus is on one of the most well-remembered episodes in the “Band of Brothers” saga: the D-Day assault by Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division on a German artillery battery near Utah Beach. It is often still cited as a classic example of superior tactics and leadership overcoming a larger enemy force.

The system uses AI to make for intense combat situations as well as unlimited replays. As the paratroopers’ commander, you will attack a determined foe. Can you succeed?

BONUS GAME MATERIAL:  Includes an in-depth article from Mathew Hinkle on the upcoming series entry Combat! Eastern Front, as well as the entire new Combat! Series Rulebook, which debuts in the same.

Issue 115
Greek House Divided: The Peloponnesian War by Mike Markowitz

A two-player (solitaire-adaptible)representation of the 27-year-long war between forces aligned with Athens (the “Delian League”) and those aligned with Sparta (the “Peloponnesian League”), which historically ended with the surrender of the former in 404 BC.

The design features a versatile Action Point system that challenges players to balance priorities across land & naval combat, building defenses, and attempting diplomacy. Random events increase replayability by reflecting the effects of the plague, the defection of Alcibiades, changes in leadership, temporary truces, and Persian subsidies.

BONUS GAME MATERIAL: Includes a new light tank mat and rules modifications for American Tank Ace (the M24 Chaffee), a new scenario for WWII Campaigns: 1940, 1941, and 1942 covering the final year of WWI’s Western Front (1918), a handy setup chart for Desert Blitzkrieg, a designer deep dive on Rebel Tide (including an in-depth rundown of all player cards), an article on Interstellar Trade in Stellar Horizons 2, and introductions to East Wind Rain and Chopper Pilot: Vietnam.

Issue 116
Gotha Raider by Gregory M. Smith

The year is 1917. After incurring heavy losses with its Zeppelin fleet, the German high command decides to continue the strategic air offensive against England with a fleet of bombers, including some of the largest biplane bombers in existence. Operating from bases in occupied Belgium, it was determined that even London can be reached, and so planning for “Operation Turkenkreuz” begins.

Gotha Raider is a solitaire game that places you in command of a group of German Gotha Bombers (Kagohl 3, the “Englandgeschwader”) in World War I. The object of the game is to conduct numerous bombing missions and to inflict maximum damage to installations on the southeast coast of England and inside London. The success of each sortie is reflected by the level of bombing damage achieved during the bomb run, with enough damage to London culminating in your receiving the highly coveted Pour le Mérite.

You will face relentless risks, as each sortie becomes more hazardous due to the passage of time and the new and more advanced enemy aircraft you will be engaging. Additionally, the High Command will be pressuring you for results to help boost the flagging morale of the German populace. The ultimate level of success you achieve rests considerably on the decisions you make.

BONUS GAME MATERIAL:

British Tank Ace game overview with example tanks, interview with Gregory M. Smith, design theory of Philip Kosnett’s Vengeance QuadThe Matador’s Cloak: A short scenario for WWII Campaigns 1940Third World War Air System, WWII Campaigns 1943 Bolero WWII Variant (includes new counters!), Island Infernos introduction by Ernie Copley, Iberian Tide game overview, and an alternate start for Desert Tide by Michael Vitale.
