Description
Three issue subscription of Paper Wars magazine including the insert game. Errata fix or bonus counters for other Compass Games may also be included (varies by issue).
Issue 98:
First Blood in the Crimea: The Battle of the Alma, 20 September 1854 by Ty Bomba
This game uses the alternating-actions system introduced here in Wagram. That system places the emphasis on players’ mastery of overall operations rather than on the minutiae of tactics. In effect, players role-play each side’s supreme commander, making the decisions those two men would make rather than the whole command chain, as is often the case many complex tactical-level games.
Issue 99:
Assault on Tobruk, Rommel Triumphant, 20 June, 1942 by Stephen Newberg
From march to December of 1941 the forces of Rommel’s Afrika Korp surrounded the Allied held fortress port of Tobruk on the Libyan coast of North Africa, but were unable to subdue it. On the 20th of June in 1942 Rommel got another chance at a cut off Tobruk as the Allies retreated from the loss of the Gazala line battles. This time Tobruk fell, and it did so in a swirling action lasting less than a single day.
Issue 100:
Bloody Retributions: The Battle of Inkerman, 5 November 1854 by Ty Bomba
This is a two-player grand-tactical simulation – easily adapted for solitaire play – of the largest Russian offensive of the Crimean War. Even so, both players have the necessity of both attacking and defending. It uses the alternating-actions system introduced here in issue no. 93’s Wagram and issue no. 98 Alma games.
